The 2003 Brother James Miller Justice and Peace Award |
| This award is named for Brother James Miller, a Christian Brother and a native of the Stevens Point, Wisconsin area, who was brutally shot and killed in Guatamala by masked gunmen on February 13, 1982. |
| The following text is taken from the 2003 Brother James Miller Day program. |
| There are many kinds of heroes; a few receive public attention. Rescue workers and
soldiers are sometimes honored, while others wage for peace in academic and government circles helping to form
public policy. Teachers battle for minds in the classroom. Parents struggle to shape the character of their children.
Religious and group leaders try to rouse the interest of members. Every Christian vocation has the potential for
heroic, sacrificial love. BROTHER REGIS FUST, S.D.S. is a quiet warrior. For the past forty years he has been commander
of the forklift, director of the Salvatorian Mission Warehouse in New Holstein, Wisconsin. He serves justice by
overseeing the shipment of donated goods to the needy around the world. His team for the Mission Supply Program
includes another Salvatorian Brother, a Salvatorian Sister and a Dominican Sister, but his army is a group of 200+
volunteers whose average age is 74, the oldest are 97 and 92. From January 1996 to December 2002 this holy crew repackaged donated goods from corporations and shipped out 2,217 semi loads, nearly 69 million pounds, to fifty mission sites in forty countries. The food, medicine, candy and supplies were all donated, and administrative costs are only .5% of their budget, but the shipping costs were over $8 million. Brother Regis is a native parishioner of St. Mary Church, Wausau (now part of Resurrection parish), and graduated from Wausau Senior High School. Last summer he celebrated fifty years of Religious Profession. According to his provincial, Father Dennis Thiessen, S.D.S., Brother Regis is a tireless worker full of fearless enthusiasm, including his own work as a missionary in Tanzania and his expert quartermastering out of New Holstein. |
1997 National Good Samaritan Award |
|
Brother Regis Fust received the 1997 National Good Samaritan of the Year Award from the National Catholic Development Conference. Past honorees include Mother Theresa and Bishop Michael Dempsey. |
